چکیده

At short wavelengths, especially C-, X-, and Kband, weather radar signals are attenuated by the precipitation along their paths. This constitutes a major source of error for radar rainfall estimation, in particular for intense precipitation. A recently developed stochastic simulator of range profiles of raindrop size distributions (DSD) provides a controlled experiment framework to investigate the accuracy and robustness of attenuation correction algorithms. The work presented here focuses on the quantification of the influence of uncertainties concerning radar calibration, the parameterization of power law relations between the integral variables (radar reflectivity Z and specific attenuation k), and total path integrated attenuation (PIA) estimates at X-band. The analysis concerns single frequency, incoherent and nonpolarimetric radar systems. Two attenuation correction algorithms, based on a forward and a backward implementation respectively, are studied. From DSD range profiles, the corresponding profiles of integral radar variables are derived. Using a Monte Carlo approach, the accuracy and robustness of the two algorithms are quantified for the different sources of error previously mentioned. This framework of realistic DSD variability provides a robust way to confirm that, under realistic assumptions concerning the PIA estimation uncertainty, the forward algorithm outperforms the backward algorithm for PIA values below 10 dB.

Attenuation Correction for Ka-band Cloud Radar Using X-band Weather Radar Data

In order to correct attenuated millimeter-wavelength (Ka-band) radar data and address the problem of instability, an attenuation correction methodology (attenuation correction with variation trend constraint; VTC) was developed. Using synchronous observation conditions and multi-band radars, the VTC method adopts the variation trends of reflectivity in X-band radar data captured with wavelet tr...

Evaluation of Networked Based Attenuation Correction in Casa Ip-1 Testbed

Monitoring of precipitation using higher frequency radar systems such as X-band is becoming popular. At X-band frequency, weather radar signals are attenuated along their paths due to precipitation. A network-based reflectivity retrieval technique has been developed for the Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) system, which is a radar network that can observe a weather event simultaneously...

Network Architecture for Small X-band Weather Radars – Test Bed for Automatic Inter-calibration and Nowcasting

In recent years the use of small inexpensive Xband radars for meteorological and hydrological purposes has increased significantly. Compared to the traditional C-band and S-band radars the X-band weather radar has the advantage of high temporal and spatial resolution and low financial cost; however, the trade off is attenuation due to X-band technology and short range due to the higher spatial ...

Drop Shape and Dsd Retrieval with an X-band Dual Polarization Radar

There is a renewed interest in the use of X-band weather radars, due to specific advantages such as applications to rainfall estimation in light rain, monitoring of sensitive areas that are inadequately covered by operational radar networks as well as the radar network concept introduced by the Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) (Chandrasekar et al. 2004). The us...

Quantification of uncertainties in attenuation correction for single-polarization weather radars at C- and X-band

At Cor X-band wavelengths, the importance of attenuation affecting the radar signal in rain has been recognized for a long time. Because of the non-sphericity of rain drops, backscaterring and propagation of electromagnetic waves depend on their polarization state. As most operational weather radars in Europe are single-polarization C-band systems, the quantification of the influence of uncerta...
